C7.7.1 EU Policies and Controls

The Council Directive 2001/42/EC “on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment”, is known as the Strategic Environmental Assessment or SEA Directive.

 

C7.7.2 UK Policies and Controls

The following regulations transposed the Directive into UK law:

Scotland:

On 21 July 2011, SEPA published a review of the efficiency and effectiveness of SEA in Scotland. The review was launched on the tenth anniversary of the coming into force of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Directive on 21 July 2001. The review had two key objectives.

  • Environmental protection and improvement aim: To identify to what extent SEA helps to achieve effective environmental protection and enhancement and to make recommendations for improvement.
  • Better regulation aim: To identify opportunities for improving and/or streamlining the SEA process to make it more efficient in operation.
