B7.3.1 Packaging

Every year each person produces 4 times as much packaging waste as their luggage allowance on a jumbo jet.

If you make, fill, sell or handle packaging or packaging material, you must comply with the Packaging Regulations.

The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations apply if your business produces packaged products, or places packaging or packaged goods on the market.

The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations apply to you if your business handles more than 50 tonnes of packaging in a year and has a turnover of more than £2 million.

Packaging is anything that is used to contain, protect, deliver or present goods. Packaging can be made out of paper, board, wood, glass, metals, plastics, cork, hessian, jute or ceramics.

Please note that the following information applies to the applicable legislation in England and Wales. This is however mirrored in the equivalent legalisation applicable to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
