A3.10 Control of Releases

There are a number of different technologies that are available to control releases. These have been categorised here into three groups:

  • Physical
  • Biological
  • Chemical

This section shall also examine Pollution Prevention Control.

The hierarchy of pollution control is to eliminate, reduce and control. In this situation, it is always preferable to eliminate the pollution in the first place. If this is not possible, the pollution should be reduced as much as possible. Finally, any remaining pollution should be controlled.

Pollution control methods may be categorised by whether they control the pollution at source, or at the receptor (where the pollution takes effect). We shall discuss:

  • Control at Source
  • Control at point of effect – End of Pipe Technology
  • Contaminated Land Treatment Technologies

Please note that the following information is quite technical in places. You do not need to have an in-depth knowledge of these technologies. However, the information is included for you to gain an awareness of the different methods available to control pollution.
