A system is established to determine the likelihood of an impact occurring and the severity of the impact. Numerical values are assigned to each of these.

The figures can be on any scale.

The determination of significance will then be assed using a multiplication:

There are generally two methods of determining significance:

1.         A figure is chosen and anything with a score above that is significant, anything with a score below it is not.

2.         A matrix is used, as demonstrated below:
