Environmental Management includes a variety of issues, including:
- Design.
- Effective resource management.
- Efficient use of energy and the use of renewable energy.
- Materials elimination or substitution.
- Waste reduction.
- Recycling.
- Carbon management.
Environmental Management can assist an organization to reduce pollution, comply with environmental legislation and reduce costs. These benefits are noted time and time again in organisations who implement an Environmental Management System (EMS).
The underpinning concept of an EMS is that of ‘continual improvement’. However good your environmental management is, it could (and should) be better. To identify whether you are improving continually, you will need to measure and monitor your performance. The principles of an EMS are discussed in more detail in Section 3.2.
