All organisations and businesses have an effect on the environment to some degree. They all use resources, whether that is energy for lighting and heating, materials for production or fuel for transport. All organisations also produce waste to some extent and therefore require the disposal of waste or effluent.
The effect that an organisation may have on the environment may be positive or negative. It is important to remember that not all effects are negative. Some organisations may conserve habitats or significantly influence others to improve their environmental performance (through the development of improved technology or because the organisation is a pressure group or enforcing authority).
