B7.2.1 Packaging Directive (94/62/EC)
The “European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC of 20 December 1994 on packaging and packaging waste” aims to prevent or reduce the impact of packaging and packaging waste on the environment. It contains provisions on the prevention of packaging waste, on the re-use of packaging and on the recovery and recycling of packaging waste.
This Directive aims to harmonise national measures in order to ensure the functioning of the Internal Market.
This Directive was transposed into UK law by the:
- Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations [SI No. 1941]
- Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 [SI No. 871]
