C10.5.2. Benefits of 2-way Communication

 

To successfully influence a person, you must also be open to influence from others. This two way process is a gesture of trust and a way to gain respect (which to achieve yourself, should also be offered to others).

If you do not approach influencing as a two-way process, you may be blind to potential pitfalls and problems. Through allowing others to influence you as part of the process, you can amend strategies and avoid unwanted consequences later on.

The same applies to negotiation. You cannot negotiate if one party will not enter into negotiations. It is a bartering process, whereby both parties aim to achieve a better deal. This by its very nature has to be a two-way process.

In essence, communication that is only one way is a dictatorship.
