B7.2.5 Battery Directive (2008/103/EC)
The “Directive 2008/103/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 amending Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators as regards placing batteries and accumulators on the market” amended the previous Battery Directive (2006/66/EC).
The Directive restricts batteries and accumulators containing hazardous substances and establishes rules regarding the placing on the market of batteries and accumulators. There are also specific rules for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries and accumulators to promote a high level of collection and recycling of waste batteries and accumulators.
This Directive was transposed into UK law by the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 [SI No. 890].
