A2.5.1 Format of a Business Case


Business cases can range from comprehensive and highly structured, as required by formal project management methodologies, to informal and brief. Information included in a formal business case might include:

  • The background of the situation (reason for the action).
  • The expected business benefits.
  • The options considered.
    • With reasons for rejecting or carrying forward each option.
    • Including the option of doing nothing.
  • The expected costs of the project.
  • The expected risks.
    • Including the risks associated with doing nothing.
  • A gap analysis.
